Types of Herpes - There Are More Than One
There are two main types of herpes. The first comes in the form of a cold sore, and is more scientifically referred to as herpes type 1.
The second is in the form of genital outbreaks and is called herpes type 2. There are others as well that present in a different way.
Both types have similar symptoms and effects. Most would say that herpes type 2, or HSV-2, is much worse than herpes type 1.
HSV-1 might present itself with a cold sore for about a week, while HSV-2 will cause the entire genital area to break out with sores.
It is interesting to note that these two different types of herpes share 50% of their DNA. The major difference between the two is the part of the body they choose to infect.
Both types can be spread the same way, and both can remain dormant in the body for long periods of time.
The types herpes are important to distinguish between, especially if you’re not sure which one you have. Herpes type 1 is found on the lips and even the inside of the mouth. The reason this type is found on the face is because the virus lives near the ears in its dormant periods.
This virus is usually very mild, and actually the majority of Americans have it. Unfortunately it can be spread to other parts of the body.
It can even move into the eyes and brain. When that happens, it is quite serious. That is why it is so important to seek treatment for any type of herpes.
Herpes type 2 affects the genital area. Unlike herpes type 1, this virus lays dormant near the base of the spine. That is why the outbreaks generally occur in the genital area.
The good news is, this type of genital herpes does not usually spread to other areas. If you know how devastating it is to have herpes in your genital region, this is a welcome relief for many people.
The other types of herpes are not generally what people think of when they consider herpes. One is actually chicken pocks! It is a little known fact that this is a strain of the herpes virus. Another is the Epstein-Barr virus. This is otherwise known as mono.
It is amazing how many different types of herpes there are. The most commonly known are genital herpes and cold sores. If you have any type of herpes, the best thing you can do is consult with your doctor.
