Mouth Herpes – Cold Sores and Fever Blisters

Posted on 12 April 2011

Mouth herpes is also known as a cold sore or fever blister. It got this nickname because it often appears when your body is trying to fight illness or infection.

If you have oral herpes, you’ll want to do everything you can to control the appearance and feeling of it.

There are some signs for you to keep an eye out for when you’re infected  on your mouth. The first thing you may notice is that a certain spot on your mouth will tingle a bit.

A few days later a blister will appear. This blister may break open and crust over. In a few days, the red area that is left over will hopefully heal.

You may not even know where you came into contact with the virus. It can seem very unfair for you to have to deal with mouth herpes when you don’t understand why you have it. Don’t worry. You’re definitely not the only one who suffers.

Oral herpes is caused by something called the Simplex Virus I. You’ll often see that shortened to HSV-I in many medical documents. This is a different strand than HSV-2, which is more commonly linked to the genital form.

Luckily, even when left untreated the outbreak tends to clear up on it’s own in about a week. This doesn’t mean you’re cured!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that everything is ok once the sore clears up because you are likely to have another outbreak at some point.

You can speed up the healing process by making sure that you never play with the sore. This really delays healing because it opens up the area and can create a wound.

It is also very important to keep in mind that you can spread this to other people. Never share drinks or utensils with other people.

Also keep in mind that kissing your partner while you have an outbreak can cause them to get the virus as well.

There are some prescription and over the counter medications that can speed up the healing process. Some of them can ever suppress the likelihood of an outbreak. Make sure you talk to your doctor to find out what the best option for you is.

Getting this STD is definitely not the end of the world. It can be a bit annoying and a little painful. The good news is that it goes away fairly quickly and may not come back for a good while. There are some great medications that can make the process even easier.

I think herpes has caused me to have something similar to chronic fatigue sindrome. I am tired leading up to the outbreak and then I become so utterly exhausted during and for a little afterwards. This disease has seriously made my life more difficult at times.

Jesse, I know the feeling. It is probably stress. stress seems to bring them out. I got one this weekend. I had 3 exams, and had to deal with filing my taxes which I owed money. It stressed me out and yes i was fatigued, and bammo I got a cold sore. I use abreva constantly when its inflamed, then as soon as I sense the flamings done, I use chapstick or something to keep it from getting a scab. Nothing worse than getting over a cold sore, just to have it re-open when drying off from the shower. I seem to be recovering from this one fast. Happens bout once a year.

Can the mouth sores lead to the genital strand?

  4. Chris says:

    Heather…

I have been diagnosed with type 1 but on my genitals. I have never heard of anyone but myself catching it this way. Sometimes I do not believe it myself. I guess I am fortunate because I went three years without an outbreak. At first I was told I had foliculutis, or ingrown hair. I am assuming this is rare.

  5. Smiley says:

I have type 1 in the genital region as well. It is rare, but the up side is it’s typically much less severe. Could always be worse, I guess.

what are the symptoms of hsv1 in the genital region? i may have this i really appreciate it

  7. shawn says:

hey, i have had kinda itchy lips for the last month. i dont know if its just stuck in my mind or what, cause all i think about is having hsv 1. i feel like its getting swollen every day and all. im going to the docs in a couple days just seeing what else this can be.

  8. KC says:

I contracted HSV 1 on the genital region as well. Smiley is right, it seems to be a lot less severe than Type 2 genital. the only thing I wonder about is can I give someone HSV 1 by kissing them? I have never had any oral sores, just genital, but I wonder if just having HSV 1 means my mouth is infected too.

  9. Jericho says:

I contracted herpes on my mouth from a woman I was dating after oral sex. As bad as the virus is, I feel fortunate that my outbreaks have been minimal in size and most of the time short-lived. My last outbreak in December was barely visible and lasted only two days.

I’m not sure if what I’m doing is exactly the reason that I’ve had such luck but I’ve stuck with it and it’s much better over the last two years.

From what I understand your L-Arginine levels in your body increases the frequency and strength of the outbreak if the level is greater than the L-Lysine in your body. Do your research first but what I do is limit the amount of food I eat which contain L-Arginine or at least counter the amount with foods which contain L-Lysine or take L-Lysine pills (500mg or 1000mg). If I feel an outbreak coming, I will take a 1000mg pill of L-Lysine at least once every two days.

Again, I’ve never been able to avoid an outbreak but they have been more managable and less embaressing.

As for the actual outbreak… best and least expensive treatment I’ve found was to apply Listerine with a cotton swab as often as possible until the sores begin to dry out and scab.

Just thought maybe someone would find this information helpful. Please research this before trying. Although I don’t recall there being any risks with my form of treatment, I’d prefer you inform yourself more before trying.

Have my yearly fever blister outbreak. I know kissing G/F is out of the question because she doesn’t get cold sores on her mouth. How do these people get it on there arms, face, other body parts, aside from the genital version?

  11. sunsetting321 says:

Hey I have 4 cold sores or blisters on the left side of my mouth and they hurt alot and i never had them before could i have contracted these from a water fountain; thats really the only thing diffrent i did the other day . I hate it everyone stares at me at school and at work. I dont know what to tell them when they say how did you get that or what is that???? if someone can give me an answer i would appreciate that thank you

  12. support101 says:

There two differnt kind of herpes hsv1 hsv2. I am dealing with oral herpes I am innocent never did nothing to deserve it but that’s life. I first got infected when I was 10yrs old, I know that is young but getting infected with hsv1 is high. Using a infected towel, drinking from someones cup who’s infected, using lipstick, kissing, anything that has to do with skin to skin contact with an infected person you will be infected to. Sometimes lifes not fair, but this world is full of sin and god made diseases to punish people those who are doing wrong.

First, I have HSV-1 and love giving oral to women. I just don’t want to give the virus to other women. I have tried using a “dental dam” (which is like a thin rubber sheet that you hold over/on the genital area of the woman), but I don’t enjoy it at all; it’s like licking a piece of paper….. I want to lick and taste the vagina of my girl, not a peice of rubber……. any suggestions?????????????
